The Million Dollar Bill Sales Letter!

Many moons ago, Robert Collier created the first dollar bill letter. And he used it during the 1920’s! Yes, that’s right. During the 1920’s he attached a dollar bill to thousands for sales letters which were marketing a non-profit organization.

In the 1920’s, a dollar was worth a little more then $11. So including printing and postage he spent, in today’s dollars approximately $11.50 per letter.

Astounding. But he got a 90% response rate so it was a massive success.

One of the tools you’ll need is a trade show follow up letter with prospects you met and gathered contact information from.

I’ll leave all the details on how to properly generate qualified leads for a later date. But for now I want to show you a sample follow up letter for a salon and spa tradeshow. Hand ShakeA follow up letter is something that can be over-thought, because usually the writer of the letter really wants all the main selling points to be summarized in the letter so that you can close the deal in the letter. Which almost never happens.

The Dollar Bill Letter!

The original one dollar bill marketing letter was written by Robert Collier, and in his must read (and study like a maniac over and over) he claims that he got a 90% return rate for a charity sales letter.

Since that time a handful of marketers copied his idea to market local businesses, and products and services of all kinds.

The most recent examples I’ve seen using a dollar bill sales letter is for selling local webmaster services, carpet cleaning, financial planning, and now construction. I even saw a book at a local bookstore enclosing a dollar bill in the cover of their book which was about how to fold a dollar bill into all kinds of cool things (Origami).

I am sure there are dozens of other industries using it as well.

Sales Letter Examples and A Case Study!

In this article I am going to reveal some sales letter examples in a case study format. Mostly you are just interested in seeing the letters but it would benefit you do know the back story to these letters.

Years ago, one of my customers, Tom Roberson, actually followed the directions I laid out for him in terms of targeting small business owners in his local area, and he got at least a 20% appointment ratio with  after one follow up call (I say, ‘he actually followed my directions’ because getting clients and customers to actually follow directions is a massive challenge, which is why I rarely take clients on anymore). Some of them even called him first!

Although he was selling group legal expense plans, who cares! Any sales letter that works can easily be adapted to fit into what you want to sell.

This is the Ultimate Example of how to write a series of sales letters to get maximum results. The sales letters I wrote used “grabbers”, headlines, and a combination of a headline with grabbers. Plus, the copy really focuses on the benefits without revealing too much.

It took many hours to write these sales letter examples. I agonized over the copy. And when I finally finished I came to the conclusion that when it was all said and done, I would charge a client at least $10,000 plus royalties to write them. But, now you can model them for your business, or use them as an exercise in writing ad copy.

This sales letter example is not just one letter for you to read and wonder about. I am very much opposed to sending one letter because if you think about the psychology of marketing, getting someone who doesn’t know you from Adam to do business with you from one measly letter is a huge waste of time and money (and is also the number one reason most people say, ‘Direct Mail Doesn’t Work’).

In this case study I used a sequence of not one, not two, and not three, but a sequence of 4 letters! That’s how you do folks.

I digress. So I used, once again, Million Dollar Bills on the first letter this time (in some of the sales letter examples on this site I use the Million Dollar ‘Grabber’ on the third letter in the sequence).

Financial Advisor Letter Example

The following financial advisor letter example be modeled for financial planning, estate planning, or retirement planning.

There is another example of a financial services letter here (bottom of page). It might even be better than this one, but you be the judge. Secondly, it uses a different type of ‘grabber’ so you should check it out anyway.

Here is a better financial advisor letter for marketing because it uses a ‘Grabber’ to ‘Grab’ the attention of your prospect (you can use any type of Grabber we are partial to the million dollar bill. For examples of other attention ‘grabbers’ read this):

The following free business opportunity lead generation or prospecting letter can be modeled for just about any business opportunity.

As with many of the marketing letters on this site we are using the million dollar bill to grab the attention of the prospect. But you don’t have to use it. It works, but there are many other grabbers you can use (also known as ‘Lumpy Mail’). Read this for details on using grabbers and a marketing letters system for more details.
